ADVENTURE TRAVEL - SCUBA DIVING IN MALVAN, KONKAN MAHARASHTRA
Last year, Deccan Odyssey took me to Scuba Diving in Malvan and Sindhudurg. Then, after a lavish Malvani lunch, I enjoyed the fort in the sea and the quiet Tarkarli beach. What I didn't get to do on that trip were adventurous activities like scuba diving and snorkelling. Soon after, I was able to snorkel in Malaysia's South China Sea. Scuba diving remained on my bucket list. I had this adventure activity in mind after we moved to Goa. We took an impromptu driving trip to Malvan Beach on Tuesday, primarily for Scuba Diving.
Malvan Scuba Diving
A row of vendors offering scuba diving and snorkelling line the road that takes boats to Sindhudurg. The majority of them were likely local youth with only basic dive training. They take you to the boat that will be your diving base - a simple boat with a small changing room on top. The dive suits they gave us were clearly old, as they were ripped in several places and appeared to have been overused. The shoes were brand new, except for the ones with fins. When I inquired, I was told that they were intended for the guides who would accompany us.
Dive Types Available
They have two types of dives available: commercial and cylinder. First, one has oxygen supplied by the boat and can only go 20 feet deep. The oxygen cylinder is tied to your back in the latter, and you can go as deep as you physically can. However, because the depth of the sea where diving is done in Malvan is not very great, it may not make much of a difference in terms of experience. Add to that the fact that cylinder diving is twice as expensive as commercial diving. Most guides only speak Marathi and a little Hindi. This can be a barrier for those who do not speak or understand the language. these languages?
They give you basic training on breathing with the equipment on. Although it is as simple as breathing only through the mouth, it takes some time to get used to it. And doing it effortlessly so that you can enjoy the underwater world.
Underwater scene that is exhilarating
Underwater exploration is always a thrilling experience. In the world above, what we see there is incredible. The sheer diversity of vegetation and corals is mind-boggling. You wonder how these hard corals are alive, and how these ferns can stand on the sea floor. How the algae resembles a carpet drawn on the seafloor. You wonder if all the colourful fish in the world have banded together to stay underwater, because the fish in the fish market are all dirty grey. It's a joy to see and feel how they move around you, tease you, and play with you when you're in their territory. You never get the impression that they are genuine. It always appears to be you are visiting a dream sequence.
I am already looking forward to my next big dive. Where would it be is an element of a bit of research and financial planning?
